What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a great way to have the Orkney Today news pop up on your computer as it happens.  If you set up RSS you will get an alert whenever news is posted on our site, you will be able to see the headline and, if you want to see the whole story, click it to bring up our site with the story.  It saves you checking for news through the day and means that you are always up to date.

Lots of national newspapers use it and it is fast becoming THE way to get news on your PC.

How can I get an RSS feed from Orkney Today?

You just need a small programme which you can get free on the web.  Examples are:-

Windows
Newz Crawler
FeedDemon
Awasu
RSSReader

Mac OS X
Newsfire
NetNewsWire

Web
Bloglines
My Yahoo!
NewsGator

You simply need to download and install a reader which is suitable for your system.  If you are not too knowledgeable about computers you might like to get a friend who is to help you.  However, the sites providing these readers are helpful and it should be very straightforward.  Once your reader is installed, run it and then open the Orkney Today website.  Click on the RSS link in FEEDS on the menu at the left hand side.  You just copy and paste the URL from the top of the browser into your RSS reader.  That’s it!

You will now see the Orkney Today headlines as they are published on our site.
