ORKNEY RFC gained promotion to National 3 in style on Saturday
afternoon as they trounced visitors Kinross 73-7 at Pickaquoy to clinch
the Caledonia League Division 1 title.
Man of the match for the home side James Linklater got all the early
points, slotting three penalties, and bagging a try and conversion
before any of his team mates go on the scoreboard.
Kinross had chipped their points in early though, and briefly lead
Orkney 6-7 after a converted try answered Linklater's first two
penalties.
However, it was more or less one way traffic after that, as Orkney built a commanding lead of 42-7 by half time.
It was more of the same in the second 40 minutes, and by the time
referee Ian Rushbrook sounded full-time Orkney had extended their lead
to 73-7.
SRU representative for the Midlands Don Burns presented the league
trophy to Orkney RFC vice captain - captain for next season - Neil
McCartney and the championship celebrations kicked off in style as the
players wished Andy McGill a happy 40th birthday.
Orkney scorers: James Linklater: two tries, seven conversions, three
penalties; Adam Baird, two tries; Raymond Moodie, two tries; Danny
Bain, one try; Andrew Cuddihy, one try; Philip Ross, one try; Rodney
Spence, one try.
