Watch stolen from Eday

POLICE in Orkney are appealing for information following the theft of an irreplaceable watch which was stolen from the Eday Heritage Centre.

The theft was reported on Tuesday by staff at the centre and is a gold rotary watch donated to the Heritage to be put on display for visitors.

Council withdraws ferry service savings response

ORKNEY Islands Council confirmed today, Wednesday, that it is to withdraw and review its response to the Scottish Government's proposed savings measures for Northern Isles ferry services, currently provided by NorthLink.

The decision has been prompted by Tuesday's announcement by the Scottish Government that the pilot for the Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) in the Western Isles will be extended for a further 12 months from next Spring at a cost of around £6.5m per annum.

Police seeking witnesses to damage

A BLUE Nissan Micra was struck by another vehicle while it was parked in the Albert Hotel car park, between 7pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday. The driver of the offending vehicle has then left the area without notifying the Micra's owner.

Also in Kirkwall, someone has defaced stonework and a bench within Tankerness House Gardens with a pen, between 9am on Friday and 9am on Monday.

Anyone with information about either of the above incidents is asked to contact the Kirkwall Police Station, tel: 872241.


Puffin joins NorthLink

A LIFE-SIZE bronze puffin, measuring 30cm high, is now set to spend the next eight months mirroring the natural habits of its real-life counterparts by wintering at sea aboard a NorthLink ferry.

Created by Eddie Hallam, a renowned sculptor from Derbyshire who makes life-size bronze sculptures by spending time on Scottish islands researching and sketching seabirds, the bronze puffin has been donated to the Scottish Wildlife Trust to help raise funds and awareness for the charity's work to protect all of Scotland's wildlife for the future.


Snack vans near schools

ORKNEY Islands Council wants to hear the public's views on proposals to introduce a ban on snack vans operating near Orkney schools during term time.

The proposal is that all street traders will be prohibited from trading within 500 metres of any school between the hours of 8am and 5pm during school term.

Seatbelt day of action

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Northern Constabulary officers will be focusing their attention on vehicle occupants who fail to wear a seatbelts.

The 24 hour 'day of action', co-ordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS), is part of the Scottish Police Services year-round commitment to reduce the number of casualties on the roads.


Register of Electors - Annual Canvass Form

EVERYONE in Orkney is being asked to confirm their electoral roll details.

Each household in Orkney should either have received an annual canvass form or will be receiving one within the next few days. Householders are being asked to ensure that these forms are completed and returned as soon as possible. Forms must also be completed and returned for vacant properties.

Lifeboat called to diver

STROMNESS lifeboat was launched on Monday afternoon after a diver became unwell in Scapa Flow.

A spokesman for Shetland Coastguard said that they were contacted by the local dive boat Triton shortly after 2pm.

Police appeal for information

A VEHICLE was stolen from outside Olson's Garage, Hatston Industrial Estate, between 9pm on Saturday, August 28 and 3.30am on Sunday. It was recovered a short distance away off the A965 Stromness Road. Enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

Police are also seeking information about a break in at Bruce's Stores on Victoria Street, Kirkwall, during the early hours of Saturday.
